Item Open Access The Economic Life of the Nashya Sheikhs of Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar Districts: A Study of the Historical Perspective(University of North Bengal, 2016-03) Md Nabiul IslamThe economic condition of the Nashyas is miserable and deplorable in compared to the other Muslim communities. ,Gradually under the pressure of a big culture and lack of consciousness their (Nashyas) own culture, tradition, beliefs, rituals etc. were pushed to the verge of endangerment rendering them socially, economically, culturally, educationally extremely backward. This paper we will attempt to show the economic life of the Nashya Sheikhs of Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar districts. Their main occupation is cultivation, but cattle farming, small scale business, selling of fish, mutton, chicken etc. are also other source of their income. Nashyas are mostly interested in cow trading. They were always a subject of subjugation and hatred by the higher class Muslims. The literacy rate among the Nashyas, especially among the women is a matter of grave concern. Superstition and lack of consciousness is another impediment to the growth of this community.Item Open Access Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Nashya Sheikh Community of North Bengal: A Study on Some Agricultural Beliefs and Practices(University of North Bengal, 2019-03) Md Nabiul IslamCultural heritage is the legacy of physical artifacts and intangible attributes of a group or society that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for the benefit of future generations. Cultural heritage is of two types: Tangible and Intangible. ‘Tangible Cultural Heritage’ refers to physical artifacts produced, maintained and transmitted intergenerational in a society. ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’ indicates ‘the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills – as well as the instruments, objects, artifacts and cultural spaces associated therewith that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their or a place’s Cultural Heritage’ Traditionally, the Nashya Sheikh Muslim community of North Bengal is believed in various Belief and Customs.. In this paper, an attempt will be made to we find out historical significance of some agricultural belief and practices of Nashya Sheikh community of North Bengal, prospect and problems facing this heritage and steps to be taken to preserve it.Item Open Access Nashya Sheikhs of North Bengal in Historical Perspectives: A Study of Ethnicity & 95 Identity Dynamic(University of North Bengal, 2017-03) Md Nabiul IslamNorth Bengal comprises of Maida, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Kalimpong districts. The residential Muslim population is one of the most important indigenous people of this region and all together as per census encompasses 25 percent of the total population in North Bengal. In this context the Muslims are the most important minority religious group in this region. They have been living in this region, even before their conversion to Islam and a large portion of indigenous Hindu population converted to Islam in 15th to J 8th century. This research paper deals with the Nashya Sheikh of North Bengal with special reference to their ethnicity-and Identity dynamics.
